MJ-ive Charity Event - 2 Rooms - with Mariachi and Passion and more!

May 1, 2010 8:00 pmtoMay 2, 2010 3:00 am

Hi folks

MJ-ive Charity Dances are pleased to announce another special evening of dancing in Leamington Spa.

MJ-ive still wanted to put on some excellent dance nights for experienced dancers, raising money for charity in the process, so they are pleased to say they’re trying a new venue, at fairly short notice, and the next event will be on Saturday 1st May, 8pm-3am, 2 rooms.

The Charity we are supporting this time is called Bath Place Community Venture. They are one of the longest established community charities in Leamington with a good track record in serving their local community. Their building got burned down last year, but they have risen from the ashes and are refurbishing Leamington’s Old Library as an alternative venue… and what a great job they have made of it so far! That’s the building we will be using and they’ve got two great floors for dancing. And it’s literally just up the road from our previous venue at the Assembly, so it’s easy to find.

There’ll be a bar till 12 midnight, and there’s also a vegetarian café inside the venue which will be open for us till 3am as well. All profits from the Bar and café go to the charity as well as all entrance fees.

On the DJ front, we’ll bring you DJ’s who know how to satisfy the longings of experienced dancers. We’ve already got CJ booked, and if you’ve read or heard about the reviews of CJ and Revdrop’s Mariachi and PASSION ‘tag’ combination in Scotland recently, then you’ll know what a treat of music you will be in store for…… PLUS we’re lining up other great DJs and some up and coming names that we’re sure you will hear more of in the future…… more on this later….

As always at MJ-ive, the DJ’s have permission to play a wide variety of music that allows you to experiment and express yourself in dancing. And you’ll have many other dancers available to join with you in that.

These events don’t happen often, so don’t miss out!

No ticket system this time….. just turn up on the door on the night….
£8 before 9pm,
£10 from 9pm-10.30pm
SORRY BUT NO ENTRY AFTER 10.30PM.

We’ll also be running 2 workshops in the afternoon….. 2pm-6pm. One will be a Beginner’s ‘Blues Style’ workshop for intermediate dancers who would like to develop how to dance to slower and more interpretative music, with more style. Cost £10 for 4 hours of workshop. The other workshop is just being finalised. More details on both to be announced later.

So…. Saturday 1st May, 8pm-3am, at Leamington Spa.
Dress: Wear something that SPArkles!
Address: The Old Library, York Road, Leamington Spa, CV31 3PR.
Questions: Ring 07929861233 or e-mail mrodham@googlemail.com.

Mariachi Tea Dance & Workshop - Scotland!

June 6, 2010
1:00 pmto10:00 pm

Starting at 6.00pm, the now infamous Mariachi tea dance is back!! Tea/coffee; biccies and cakes; lovely chilled atmosphere; fantastic dancers and Mariachi Lite tunage…

Mariachi believes in inspiring music… music which begs to be danced to, not music you dance to out of obligation. Within every Mariachi track, there are layers… U can choose to dance to the obvious layers, the rhythms or the more complex subtleties underneath.

Mariachi plays every style from flamenco to rock, going through country, R&B, pop, latin and Rock ‘n’ Roll on the way. A glimpse at the website will give U previous playlists but you can expect to hear Santana, Van Morrison through to Black Eyed Peas… passing Eagles, Daniel Bedingfield and many others on the way…

More genres than usual, more range of tempi than normal… enc
ouraging expression within your dance, some tunes U know, some old friends U haven’t met, yet..

Workshop -

When we are taught to dance… when is it we are actually taught to dance??

We all know the model… we learn moves, we learn to take each part of the move on the beat… we hope our partner “knows” the move and then she’ll “follow”.

But is this dance?? Really dancing??

This workshop is about taking U beyond moves… over 4 hours, Pauline “Cheeks” Roddy and I will be covering lots and lots of technique to enhance the moves U already have…

We will look at techniques such as frame, connection, body leading, pausing, leading and following varying speeds within the same move, etc…

There will also be some for Q&A session… I have found myself in situation X, thought I was going to position Y and ended up here… What can I do to help?? etc, etc, etc…

And so, we go beyond the moves, into real communication and the essence of dance…

Come with us for the afternoon and feel yourself being catapulted into a new realm…

Cost Tea Dance £8 advance £10 door , Workshop £25 or Tea Dance & Workshop -£30

Venue: Masonic Hall 183-185 Admiralty Road, Rosyth, United Kingdom

Aerials with Frank Blueshoes
An aerial is a move where both of one of the partner’s feet leave the floor at the same time. Taken by Frank “Blueshoes” this workshop will cover aerials and “big” moves. With the emphasis on safety and style you will be shown how to perform several different aerials and big moves. Over four hours it will be demonstrated how these moves are about technique and not strength, and how they can be integrated into your dancing. The appropriate circumstances in which to perform aerials will also be covered. Due to the nature of the moves the workshop will feature one on one tuition where necessary.

This workshop is aimed at the more adventurous dancer wanting to try out something more complicated than they would usually encounter. Please note that due to the physical nature of the tuition participants must be fit and uninjured. This will be a fixed partner workhop.

Or

Blues with CJ & Yliander

Beautifully expressive, a combination of musicality and attitude, connection and stillness… Blues dancing is nowhere near as difficult as it looks. This workshop dispels some of the myths, makes blues more accessible, gives emergency blues moves and takes your Blues forward by leaps and bounds. Aimed at those not yet comfortable with Blues or those wanting to take their first steps into this world, it will give techniques, tips and confidence by the bucketful…

Workshops run 1-5pm and will be at the Masonic Hall & Gothenburg Hotel.

We proudly present The Passion of Mariachi: Resurrecting Expressive Dancing!!!!

Come join us for a weekend of Easter Mayhem which sees a selection of the most prominent weekender DJ’s descending on Fife.

On Saturday 3rd April we have 4.5 hours of Full Phat Mariachi with CJ and guest DJ Blueshoes.

Easter Sunday brings a full 6 hours of Mariachi Blues and “Passion” the expressive piano and sax music of Revdrop.

Join us for a weekend of Easter Mayhem which is going to include Full Phat Mariachi on Saturday 3rd April with special guest DJ Blueshoes and an extended 6hr(!) Sunday Tea Dance (4th April) with yet another guest DJ the divine Revdrop. In addition to all that decedent musical goodness there will be workshops Saturday & Sunday.

Saturday is the full Bhuna!! Yep, four hours of Full Phat Mariachi!! Guest DJ Blueshoes and CJ will be taking turns to take you on a fantastic journey… through all genres, an enormous range of tempi, styles and dynamics and of course the On-The-Hour-Experimental-Track… these experienced DJs will guide you, lead you and yet follow you as we dance to a wide range of guitar music just begging to be danced to. Great dancers, great hall, great music…

For six whole hours at the Sunday Tea Dance you will be enveloped, caressed, moved by the intensity, the sensuality and the pure dancability of what is to come… Intense, rich Mariachi Blues, every track a sumptuous treat to all your senses. CJ will play guitar orientated blues whilst Revdrop will massage your very sensibility with his “Passion”… Expressive music featuring piano and/or sax!! Tea/coffee/cakes and Easter treats too!!

Both Blueshoes and Revdrop are respected dancers in their own right. Both have also taught around England as well as made their name at national weekenders. Blueshoes has a reputation as a DJ with taste who plays a wide variety of tunes… He has a real passion for blues and will bring a nice contrast to Mariachi. Revdrop has taken his “Passion” around the country and it has proven very successful. Like Mariachi, “Passion” is all about expressive music, pushing dancers and insiring them to new heights on the dance floor. At previous events, Mariachi and “Passion” have worked very well together, complementing each other and enhancing the evening as a whole.

All this and…Saturday and Sunday workshops too…

Then the first weekend in February, we are back in Scotland again for our bi-monthly tea dance and workshop in Rosyth. This workshop is entitled “Momentous Moves” and CJ & Pauline “Cheeks” Roddy will be focusing on nice moves which will help express “moments” in the music.

There’s nothing worse than knowing a really nice moment is coming up in the music, getting all prepared then hearing it go “woosh” as it passes you and your partner!! Well, this workshop is going to tool you up with lots of moves and variations to ensure that both follows and leads can pick the right move for the moment, then milk every single drop of musicality and style…

Pauline has an extensive background in dance starting with tap and ballet as child and followed up by Modern Jive, Ballroom and Argentine Tango and most recently West Coast Swing. Since starting Modern Jive 6 years ago she had been in numerous cabarets performing around Scotland and competing around the country, In addition to cabarets she has won and placed in a number of competitions so brings a wealth of knowledge that you won’t want to miss out on to this workshop.
